An over enthusiastic fan caused injury to Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte. The swimmer suffered from a torn MCL and a sprained ACL when a female fan ran towards him, and they toppled over.
The incident took place on Sunday, November 3 in Florida. A teenage fan spotted Lochte who then tried to catch her. The two toppled over and he hit his knee on a sidewalk curb. Meanwhile, the admirer who also fell to the ground was uninjured.
"As a result of a freak injury caused by an unexpected fan encounter, Ryan has suffered a torn MCL and an ACL sprain and will be taking a break from training and competition," a representative of Lochte said in a statement. "His medical team expects him to make a full and speedy recovery and Ryan thanks everyone for their well wishes."
Since such injury could take months to heal, Lochte will be likely absent from representing USA in Duel in the Pool as well as USA Swimming nationals, both take place in December.
This is not the first injury that Lochte suffered due to non-sport activities. According to several reports, he has had injuries from break dancing, chasing his pet dog, reaching for his cellphone in his car, falling out of a tree, skateboarding and riding a scooter.
