Lady Gaga has defended Katy Perry after her American Music Awards performance sparked ‘an amount’ of Twitter backlash accusing her of racism. But then what doesn’t spark a Twitter backlash, these days? Nothing, it seems. Nothing at all.
Perry’s performance of Unconditionally caused a bit of agg after she shuffled on stage dressed as a geisha and proceeded to do a load of mildly culturally insensitive poses and stances that were basically two points removed from taping the corners of her eyes down and shouting ‘ME SO HORNY’ over a Casio keyboard preset.
But speaking to Radio.com, Gaga defended her fellow pop doer, saying that no, she wasn’t appropriating someone else’s culture and cartoonising it for performance’s sake, actually.
“I think people are generally too sensitive and they should just leave her be,” Gaga said. “But, you know, I’m not really the person to ask.”
She added: “Maybe it’s just because Unconditionally means you’re supposed to love no matter what, and geishas are paid?” Even Lady Gaga doesn’t know what your performance was about, Katy. That’s how mad it was.
Meanwhile, Katy’s stylist Johnny Wujek has defended the performance, because of course he did. He’s hardly going to say, ‘We totally meant to be hella racist. We are both hella racist. Take THAT, Japan!’, is he?
“Katy and I both love Japan,” he over-explained. “The people are so kind, there's so much there visually. Just walking around [in Japan], you feel something. We wanted to try and encompass that in the performance somehow, almost a tribute." Alright mate, whatever. ‘One of my best friends is Japan’.
