Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were basically the ultimate poster girls of the 90s. Whether you knew the Olsen Twins from watching Two Of A Kind, Passport To Paris, Switching Goals or one of the other twin-based rom-com films they churned out, everyone was aware of them and their adorable identical faces.
However, now the girls are all grown up, they've decided to let us in on a little secret. Are you ready for this?
THEY'RE NOT MAKING MOVIES ANYMORE!
Dum dum duuuuuuuum - except we kind of already knew that, because the last film they made was New York Minute back in 2004. Which, to be perfectly frank, was something of a massive flop. A two thumbs down, as they say in the biz. A cause for the girls to be nominated for Worst Screen Couple at the Razzie Awards.
In short, it was bad. So we weren't too surprised that the girls haven't appeared in a film or television show for almost a decade. What is surprising, however, is that the girls have chosen to explain this to their fans.
"With what we were doing in business when we were younger, I don't think it ever felt like we were actresses, because we spent so much more of our time not in front of the cameras, building a brand," Mary-Kate explained to WWD.
Thankfully, the girls learned a LOT during their time in the spotlight, which means they were able to create their very own fashion label The Row.
Ashley explained: "We've been exposed to so much."
"We were very fortunate to have parents and people around us who wanted us to be part of the creative meetings and the business meetings, and we would just sit and listen and be sponges. At that time in your life, you really are a sponge.
Nowadays, the girls have no intention of acting ever again. They're not in the showbiz industry, you see. They're in the FASHION industry.
"We have a video catalogue of everything we did when we were younger, so we're looking at distribution for that now. That's not being in show business, but it's been fun talking to these people we used to be in business with many, many years ago. But the industries are completely different."
Mary-Kate added: "We still feel welcome in the [entertainment] industry. But it's not the one we're in."
Hmm. We guess we'll have to pin our hopes on the youngest (and non-identical) Olsen sister Elizabeth if we want to see the family win an Oscar someday.
