At last, Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 10. After an introduction by R.E.M.'s vocalist Michael Stipe, Nirvana's surviving members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, took turn to deliver their acceptance speeches.

"Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard," Stipe saluted the grunge band. "But with their music ... Nirvana blasted through all that with crystalline, nuclear, rage-infused fury...Kurt, we miss you. I miss you," he said.

Grohl and Novoselic then showed up. The Foo Fighters founder said he "got really lucky" and credited his mother as saying, "Mom, thanks for letting me drop out of high school." Bassist Novoselic said, "I wish Kurt was here tonight," adding that "Kurt was an intense artist and he really connected with a lot of people."

Cobain's widow Courtney Love also appeared, looking emotional as she said, "I have a big speech but I'm not going to say it." She added, "I just wish Kurt could have been here." She paused to hug Grohl and Novoselic before resuming her speech, "Tonight he would have really appreciated it. I just want to give this to our daughter Francis Bean, who couldn't be here because she was ill."

Cobain's mother held back tears while saying, "I just miss him so much, he was such an angel."

Grohl and Novoselic, with Pat Smear on guitar, were then joined by four female rockers to perform Nirvana's hits. Joan Jett played guitar as she belted out "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth performed "Aneurysm" with the band, St. Vincent's Annie Clark helped deliver a rendition of "Lithium", and Lorde was in charge of the vocals in "All Apologies".

Later on that night, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Carrie Underwood teamed up to sing "When Will I Be Loved" by The Everly Brothers. Other inductees, including Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall and John Oates, The E Street Band, Cat Stevens, Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham, also performed at the ceremony.

KISS and Linda Ronstadt were the only honorees who didn't make live performance.
